FAQ
Current limits and answers about your data.
Can I use Catch without running a server?
Someone needs to run one. You can use a server managed by someone you trust; ask them for an account or invite. There is no hosted Catch service at this documentation site.
Are my notes encrypted so the administrator cannot read them?
Notes and files you create in the vault are encrypted on your devices; the server and its backups hold only ciphertext. The vault has a separate password and recovery code that an administrator cannot reset. Ordinary notes remain readable by someone with database, disk or backup access. A remembered vault is accessible to anyone who can open Catch on that device.
Can I share a note or collaborate?
Share offers a read-only Catch link with files and future updates, or a Markdown content copy without files or updates. Anyone with the share link can read it; an account on the same server can add it to Gallery. Only the owner edits. Vault notes cannot be shared, and copying an ordinary note address still does not grant access. Android also receives material into Catch.
Is there an iPhone, iPad or desktop app?
Use the browser or installed web app. The repository ships a native Android app, not a native iOS or desktop app. Browser feature support varies; Notifications settings explains whether the current device can receive reminders.
Can I export my notes?
Data Management currently offers Keep import only. General Markdown import, bulk note export and personal account exports are not implemented. Share > Note content can copy or send an individual ordinary note as Markdown without its files. You can download individual attachments. An administrator can make a whole-server backup, which contains every account's data and is not a personal export.
Does search read pictures or use AI?
Search matches text in your locally synced notes. It does not read text from images or documents, perform semantic search or generate AI summaries.
Does deleting a note remove it everywhere?
Moving it to Trash syncs to your other devices and keeps it recoverable there. Delete forever or Empty trash removes it and its attachment files. Existing downloaded files and older server backups are separate copies.
Why are changes or notes missing on another device?
Changes still saved only on the first device have not reached the server. Check its cloud indicator and offline status. Make sure both devices use the same server and account. An account with queued changes must be open to sync them.
Where can I report a problem?
For connection, invites, passwords, quota or server updates, contact your administrator. For a reproducible app problem, use GitHub issues, including app/server versions and the steps to reproduce. Do not post passwords, invite links, session tokens, private notes or backup files.
